Caterpillar Engine Assembly Plant
887,000 square foot engine manufacturing building; 200,000 square foot paint building; 500,000 square foot addition to the past building
Beginning in 2009, Caterpillar launched construction of the new engine assembly building in Seguin, Texas. Soils at the site consisted of clays, sands, clayey sand and gravel with water. The upper clay profile was highly expansive; therefore, the soils were mechanically reconditioned onsite and capped with limestone marl mined from other areas across the property.
The granular substrata made the site highly conducive to auger cast in place piles. Pile production typically exceeded 20 per day with pile lengths in excess of 40 feet. The neighboring paint building was started prior to completing the manufacturing building with both buildings finishing very close to the same time.
Since initial construction, an additional assembly line has been added inside the engine building and the 500,000 square foot addition has been started at the paint building. Burton Construction completed the first two buildings and FA Peinado is now working on the addition.

RadioShack Riverfront Campus World Headquarters
Fort Worth, Texas
900,000 square foot facility with multiple cast-in-place buildings
Radio Shack bought the former Ripley Arnold public housing complex in Downtown Fort Worth. The complex was razed and had the new 900,000 square foot corporate headquarters campus was built. When completed in 2005, RadioShack's new corporate headquarters became a model for sustainable and environmentally smart buildings. The 2,500 employees who occupy the buildings have the added assurance of knowing that concerns about formaldehyde emissions are reduced because the fiber glass insulation used in the project contains a non-hazardous acrylic binder.
"LEED criteria or not, improving indoor air quality is becoming more and more of an issue in building design," said Taylor. "It's nice to know products such as JM Formaldehyde-free™ insulation exist. RadioShack and our future clients are sure to benefit from the formaldehyde-free™ offering."
